About Dementia

Champlain Dementia NetworkDementia is a general term that describes a set of symptoms caused by diseases of the brain. Symptoms include loss of memory, judgment and ability to communicate, and severe changes in mood and behaviour.


Diseases that cause dementia include:

  • Vascular Dementia
  • Frontotemporal Dementia
  • Lewy Body Dementia

Alzheimer Disease is a progressive, degenerative brain disease that destroys vital brain cells. It accounts for two thirds of all dementias in Canada. It eventually results in a complete loss of independence and is the fourth leading cause of death among seniors.
